Description
Low-level laser light therapy (LLLT), or cold laser therapy, is used to treat a multitude of conditions requiring the stimulation of healing, relief of pain and inflammation, and restoration of optimal function. Although the skin is the organ that is naturally exposed to light, additional supplementation of red and near-infrared wavelengths is highly beneficial. These specifically charged photons are absorbed by the mitochondrial chromophores within skin cells. As a result, electron transport, Adenosine Triphosphate, nitric oxide release, improved blood flow, and upregulation of beneficial signaling pathways. Stem cells are also beneficially affected to effectively increase tissue repair and regeneration.
In dermatology, LLLT has beneficial effects on anti-aging, wrinkles, acne scars, hypertrophic scars, and healing of burns. LLLT can reduce UV damage both as a treatment and as a prophylaxis. In pigmentary disorders such as vitiligo, LLLT can increase pigmentation by stimulating melanocyte proliferation and reduce depigmentation by inhibiting autoimmunity. Inflammatory diseases such as psoriasis and acne can also benefit.
